Why Study Sanderson's Laws of Magic?
As a fantasy author, understanding how to craft compelling and consistent magic systems is crucial. Brandon Sanderson, one of the most prolific fantasy authors of our time and one of my favorite authors in the genre, has developed a comprehensive framework for creating magic systems that not only enchant readers but also serve the story effectively.
Key Takeaways from This Lecture
In crafting the multi-faceted and confusing magic system for "The Luminary," I found Sanderson's First Law particularly influential: "An author's ability to solve conflict with magic is directly proportional to how well the reader understands said magic." This principle guided me in developing a system that's both mysterious and logical, allowing readers to anticipate solutions without losing the sense of wonder.
What struck me most about Sanderson's approach is how he balances the need for systematic rules with the preservation of mystery. In fantasy writing, it's tempting to explain everything, but sometimes the unknown can be more powerful than the known. This video helped me find that sweet spot in my own writing. I must say, however, this being my first delve into writing evoked a major sense of confusion with the world of magic.
Applying These Principles
In "The Sword of An Máraithe", I have to admit to the flaw of non-adherance to the law of expense of magic comes at a cost, maybe in its sense of power element. I did, though, give it an ability to take a psycological toll on those who became skeptical or bigoted toward its use and the naivite of its source. This helped become a source of tension aimed at the plot within the developing arc of the story and protagonists endeavor to conquer the Void Essence. (But let us remain as spoiler free to those who prefer to learn the story as they read.)
